The most persistent plea of weary pilots has always been for a machine warning them that they were about to collide with an oncoming airplane. Studies of landing patterns confirm that collisions are increasing yearly, and pilots verify hundreds of reports of near misses. Recently, a system that would electronically anticipate oncoming airplanes was devised, and the pilot’s dilemma to dive or to climb, to detour to left or right may be solved. The system has merit, though, only if every plane can transmit and receive a signal to and from an oncoming plane. However, most aviation experts feel that only a system that watches every airplane in the sky will relieve a problem that tends to baffle everyone who attempts to find a solution.

The Detour

It was supposed to be a simple mission. Just transmit the data to the headquarters and get out of there. But things got complicated when they ran into a dilemma: the road was blocked by a landslide and they had to take a detour through the forest. They didn’t anticipate the ambush that awaited them there. They barely managed to escape, but not without casualties. One of them was wounded and needed urgent medical attention. Another one had a plea: he wanted to go back and verify if their friend was still alive. He couldn’t believe that he had left him behind. He felt weary and guilty. But the leader had to make a tough decision. He said they had to keep moving and confirm their location to the extraction team. He said they had no time to waste and no merit in risking their lives for a lost cause. He said they had to relieve themselves of any emotional attachment and focus on the mission. He said that was the only way to honor their fallen comrade. But his words didn’t baffle the dissenting soldier. He still wanted to go back. He still wanted to try. He still wanted to hope. And so, he did something that would change everything. He grabbed his gun and pointed it at the leader’s head. He said he was sorry, but he had to do it. He said he was going back, with or without him. He said he was ready to collide with his fate.
