The Second Presidential Debate, Is it Gibran’s Time to Shine or Make Another Blunder?

The presidential debate has captured the attention of some Indonesian citizens. Those who are politically aware and curious to see Gibran debate against senior politicians will make an effort to watch this presidential debate.

Previously, Gibran rarely attended invitations to public debates organized by various community groups and even national television stations. Other candidates, on the other hand, often attended.

Gibran’s team stated that he would only attend if the debate was organized by the General Election Commission (KPU) as the official organizer of open debates. And today is the day for the Indonesian people to see Gibran debate.

The second presidential debate for the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres) will be held tonight, Friday (22/12/2023). This debate is specifically dedicated to the vice presidential candidates (cawapres). There are three vice presidential candidates who will compete, namely vice presidential candidate number 1 Muhaimin Iskandar, vice presidential candidate number 2 Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and vice presidential candidate number 3 Mahfud MD.

However, the three presidential candidates are also scheduled to attend, including presidential candidate number 1 Anies Baswedan, presidential candidate number 2 Prabowo Subianto, and presidential candidate number 3 Ganjar Pranowo.

The debate for the vice presidential candidates will take place on Friday (22/12/2023) and will start at 19:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The debate will be held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta. The Chairman of the General Election Commission (KPU) of Indonesia, Hasyim Asy’ari, stated that the debate will last for 150 minutes and will be divided into 6 segments. Specifically, 120 minutes for the vice presidential debate, and 30 minutes for commercials.

The public, especially those who love presidential debates, are surely curious about Gibran’s performance in the debate. The public rarely sees Gibran debating against his vice presidential rivals. Gibran’s opponents are not ordinary people, but those who have extraordinary experience in politics and debating.

Moreover, vice presidential candidate number 03, Prof. Mahfud MD, has a comprehensive background in the judiciary, executive, and legislative branches. His educational background is exceptional, and he is highly knowledgeable in the field of law. Mahfud is accustomed to debating with “intimidating” individuals, including members of parliament.

Gibran’s opponents, especially Mahfud MD, have a strong presence and are capable of making respected members of the council panic during hearings. Despite facing a group attack, Mahfud MD holds his ground and proves to be a worthy opponent.

Both Cak Imin and Mahfud MD have developed strong mental resilience due to their extensive experience. They have faced and overcome various challenges in life, which has prepared them to handle pressure effectively.

On the other hand, Gibran’s experience is still relatively limited. With only three years of being a mayor, he still needs more time to mature and gain more experience. The vice presidential debate tonight can serve as a platform for Gibran to showcase his abilities, but it also carries the risk of him becoming a target of attacks from other vice presidential candidates and potentially making mistakes.

Let’s watch and see how it unfolds.
